SOV-BRIDGE PROJECT-2007A

Recent times have seen the expected operational requirements of a starship to grow exponentially; with this in mind Starfleet has released the following.

Many of the classes of starship currently in use within Starfleet have the much under utilised facility to enhance the ships performance with an interchangeable bridge. One of these is of course the sovereign class starship.

It has been decided that although it would fall within the mandate of the engineering department to execute the actual installation of a new bridge, the appropriate department to design the bridge layout would be the operations department with the input of all other departments.

It falls to the departmental chiefsor his deputies of any ship to be in ‘control’ of many areas of the ship at any given time during their duty shift, with him working as an ‘interpreter’ between many departments and in view if this action they have (or should have) an overall concept of the general day to day requirements of the ship as a whole, and therefore it would seem the correct course of action for them to be the designer.

The bridge is the primary command centre for Starships and other spacecraft. On most Federation Starships the bridge is located on Deck1, at the top of the Primary Hull.

As the designers you must take into account the different roles and requirements of each department on the bridge, so although how the bridge looks is important the positioning of consoles etc is of utmost importance.

For example the Chief of Security must be in an appropriate position when it comes to protecting any Flag Officer who may be on the bridge from any possible harm from any situation that may arise. It has been noted in the past that a major design flaw of the standard bridge layout of the Galaxy Class Starship saw the Security Chief (or his deputy) separated from the Captain and FO by a rail, which ran the whole distance along the mid point of the bridge. Therefore creating a barrier that though pleasing to the eye could take precious extra seconds to bypass in the event of an emergency.

Below is a list of stations usually required on a starship bridge, however if ‘your’ design requires other specific stations feel free to include them?

  1. Captain (Commanding Officer).
  2. First Officer.
  3. Counsellor.
  4. Operations.
  5. Helm/Navigation
  6. Science
  7. Security.
  8. Engineering.
  9. Tactical.

As I have said this is by no means an exhaustive list and you should take into account to include in your design stations/areas which would/could be mission specific. Include throughout this website are various examples of bridge designs from several ships and an outline of the sovereign class bridge for you to work on. (Although the bridge will be interchangeable they MUST be of the same generic ‘jigsaw’ design as they have a specific ‘hole’ to fill).

The Enterprise-DBridge has been studied numerous times by various defence and aerospace organisations as a model for an efficient futuristic control room. At least one such computerised command centre has been built, closely based on the design of the EnterpriseBridge.

When designing your bridge please take into account the ‘look’ and ‘feel’ of Starfleet and the Federation. Would it be appropriate fore the bridge to be pink with fluffy dice hanging on the viewscreen? I’ll leave that up to you.

Required for the project is the following:

  1. An aerial view of the bridge with a key to explain console positions etc.

    sov_bridge

  2. A view through the eyes of an officer stood in front of the viewscreen facing the main bridge.

    front_view

  3. A brief outline of why ‘your’ design contains any particular aspects.

This project is intended to aid your understanding of the day-to-day workings of a Starship Bridge and subsequently the ship as a whole, and also why bridge is designed the way it is. Although every effort should be taken to make your project as presentable as possible it is important to understand this is not an exercise in art. So just do your best.

On that point I will however be presenting a certificate for the best presented project however this may not make it the best design.

The deadline for this project is September 20th at 17:00hrs. Please send projects via email to
Captain David Naughton-Shires

I will post the results on the Sovereign Web Page.
I will need you to include the following with your project:

Name
Rank
Serial Number
Department
Position on Ship (is any)
Email Address
Postal Address
The name to appear on any certificate awarded
(if different from above).

This project although originally intended as an ops dept project is open to all crewmembers of the USS Sovereign NCC-71717, the fleet in general and fandom in general.

Most of all you need to remember this is a hobby so have fun. That’s an order.

Regards

Captain David Naughton-Shires
